Seventh Grade
The seventh grade year is a lot of fun. We share our stories, focus ourselves on academic quality, build friendships and do it all remembering that we are in the loving presence of the Holy Spirit.
RELIGION
In seventh grade, we learn more about the New Testament.
We focus on the person of Jesus in history, the gospels, the parables of Jesus, the Sacraments, and forms of prayer. Students will explore the historical and cultural context in which Jesus lived, as well as the significance of his teachings and message. They will analyze the four gospels, with special attention given to the unique perspectives and theological themes of each author. Students will also study the parables of Jesus, examining the messages and lessons contained within each story.
In addition to studying the life and teachings of Jesus, students will learn about the Sacraments and their significance in the Catholic faith. They will explore the seven Sacraments and their role in helping people grow closer to God. Finally, students will practice various forms of prayer, including meditation, contemplation, and vocal prayer, as well as explore the importance of prayer in their own spiritual lives.
EARTH SCIENCE The curriculum is designed to help students develop a scientific understanding of the Earth and its systems. They will learn about the processes that shape our planet, including weathering, erosion, and deposition. They will investigate the movement of the Earth's plates and the resulting volcanic and seismic activity. Students will also explore the Earth's atmosphere and ocean, learning about weather patterns, ocean currents, and the impact of human activity on these systems.
Overall, the seventh grade Earth science curriculum is an exciting and engaging exploration of our planet and its natural processes. Your child will have the opportunity to develop their scientific knowledge and skills, while also gaining an appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the world around us.
MATH
The class, as the year before, begins the year with an assessment and is split into two groups. The advanced group, with Mrs. Boyle as their teacher, completes 8th grade math standards in preparation of completing Algebra in 8th grade. The second group works through the regular seventh grade math material studying pre-algebra.
ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS (ELA)
English is a combination of the study of grammar and its application in writing.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Welcome to seventh grade social studies!
In seventh grade students will explore the Eastern Hemisphere through the physical and political geography, history, and cultures of Africa, Asia, and Europe. The goal for students in seventh grade is to begin to make connections between the Eastern and Western Hemisphere historical events. Students will continue to apply the five geographic themes to historical events and current news. Seventh graders are introduced to historical thinking skills and begin to analyze primary source documents. Seventh graders build on their learning of government structures and economic theories and begin to analyze the lasting effects in regions of the world.
Students read and discuss current news through Jr. Scholastic magazines. The seventh graders will work independently and practice collaboration in small groups. Over the course of a school year students will create presentations about a Renaissance historical figure, label historical and current maps, and apply essential questions to regions of the world to identify the change and continuity of time in that region. Students will participate in historical simulations, mock trials, and Socratic seminars.
READING
The reading text for seventh grade is The Language of Literature. Units covered include fiction, nonfiction, mythology, and fantasy. Students are expected to complete 125 minutes of independent reading per week. To link with social studies, they read novels set in Europe, Asia, and Africa.
NIGHT OF THE NOTABLES
One of the most memorable events of seventh grade is the Night of the Notables. It is a time when students get to immerse themselves in a research project on a notable person. The project includes a detailed outline and paper on the person, which allows the student to dive deep into their life and accomplishments. Once the research paper is complete, the student must design a learning center that showcases their Notable's achievements. Finally, the student must prepare and deliver a speech on their Notable. The Night of the Notables is an exciting and rewarding experience that challenges students to think critically and creatively about history and the people who shaped it.
